Funeral Service Held for A Retired Old Timer

Wiley Hawkins

Wiley H. Hawkins, 80, retired Spiral Department Old Timer, died on Feb 4, in a Darlington hospital

following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held on February 6, at 4 p.m. from the Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev.

Harvey H. Byrd and the Rev. Moody Gunter officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jennings Polson, J. S. Hawkins, Coker (Coke) Hawkins, Allen Atkinson, Bobby Howle and

Robert Atkinson.

Honorary bearers were Leo Byrd, Weldon Byrd, Harley Hawkins, Boyd Gainey, Clyde Connel, L. L.

Sparrow, Hilton P. Byrd, Barto L. Howle and Carroll Chapman.

Wiley was born in Darlington County, a son of the late James L. and Sally Chapman Hawkins. He was

employed in the Spiral Department from 1929 until his retirement in 1955. He was a member of the Old Timers

Club and also a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Effie O’Neal Hawkins, Hartsville; two daughters, Mrs. Lester C. (Gladys)

Gainey, Hartsville, and Mrs. William C. (Nellie) Gregory, Milford, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Lester ( Lucille)

Adamson, Rock Hill and Mrs. Ed (Margaret) Steele, Fort Mill; 12 grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.
